From the Heart of Tweets to the Reality of Inflation: An Analysis of the Lived Experiences of Iranian Twitter User

Inflation, as one of the key economic crises in Iran, is a capital for people’s lives and has become a recurring topic on X. Therefore, it is important to explore the lived experiences of Iranian X users about inflation. The aim of this research is to deeply investigate the experience of inflation and its consequences on the lives of these users. Using a qualitative method and analyzing related tweets, 174 tweets were categorized using MaxQuda (2018) software. The findings were divided into subcategories such as “absolute powerlessness”, “social exclusion”, “vegetative life”, “emotional erosion”, “mental aging”, “death wish”, and “reduced form of resilience”, which ultimately resulted in two main categories of “feeling of distortion” and “torture”. This research highlighted its social and psychological effects beyond the economics of inflation. The results of the study show that inflation has become a “star of collapse” in the discourse of Iranian users: collapse of dreams, collapse of relationships, and ultimately, collapse of the meaning of life. This study shows how inflation, by destroying the “emotional capital” of individuals, has led to isolation, distrust, and alienation, and in addition.
